Coinciding with Perth Museum's winter exhibition, Waters Rising, the AK Bell Library Environmental Film Club will be showing a series of relevant movies and documentaries about the current state of our environment.
From Seed and Food production to more controversial topics like GMOs and fossil fuel alternatives, the film club will be opening discussions about what can be done, what needs to be done and by whom.
The screening for January will be Chasing Coral, a 2017 American documentary about a team of divers, scientists and photographers from around the world who document the disappearance of coral reefs. Chasing Coral was produced by Exposure Labs and directed by Jeff Orlowski. It premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and was released globally on Netflix.
Between 2014 – 2017, Chasing Coral captured the most severe bleaching event in recorded history. During these years, 75% of corals suffered or died from heat stress brought on by climate change. It is predicted that if nothing changes, by 2034 there will be severe bleaching events every year, and by the end of the century every reef in the world will bleached.
