What can soils tell us in relation to crime? Prof. Lorna Dawson is an international expert in soil science based in Aberdeen. She has advised government, police, authors such as Anne Cleeves, and television programme makers on many aspects of soil science, including its use in criminal cases. She has been an expert witness in many high-profile criminal cases, such as the "World's End murders", and is always keen to communicate the science behind the headlines.
Prof. LornaDawson CBE, FRSE, FRSA, ChSci, FlSoilSci has a B.Sc. in Geography but went on to develop skills in soil science. She is now Principal Scientist and Head of the Centre for Forensic Soil Science at the James Hutton Institute & Honorary Professor at Robert Gordon University & CESPU in Portugal, and holds many other responsible positions. As a trained expert witness, she has worked on over 200 cases with police, agencies & lawyers internationally. Among other awards, she received the RSE James Hutton medal for excellence in the communication of Earth and Environmental sciences in 2023 and a CBE in 2018 for services to soils and forensic science.
