What is contemporary Scots and who speaks it? Speak for yersel -is an online which crowdsources the words, sounds and sentence structures that are used around Scotland today. Maps were generated to show which forms are used where. The talk discusses these, digging deeper into the complex patterns of language use across Scotland, revealing how Scots varies and how it is changing in the 21st century. Jennifer Smith is professor of Sociolinguistics at the University of Glasgow. Her research focuses on how and why languages vary and change across time and space. She has published extensively on Scots, including how young children acquire Scots, and whether we can trace remnants of Scots in dialects worldwide.
